A reduction print is a limited edition. The plate is cut so only that which the artist wants white is removed from the block of wood (plate). The lightest color is printed on a certain number of pieces of paper cut to size. More wood (or linoleum) is removed from the plate so that some of the lightest color will appear in the print and a darker color is printed over the first color.
This continues with however many colors the artist chooses to use in a particular print edition.
 
By the time all the colors are printed this plate can never be used to print the same image making it a limited edition. Each signed, hand pulled print is considered an "original" because each print is slightly different due to the multitude of variables in the process of printmaking.
